The Second Step Programme

WHY IS IT CALLED THE SECOND STEP PROGRAMME?

The programme is called The Second Step because individuals have already taken the first one, simply by acknowledging and realising there’s a problem. They might have thought about their actions or their mental health and discussed concerns with someone they know or a professional. They might have searched for information on-line about what they can do to change. However someone finds The Second Step programme, they’re on the right path, and The Jenkins Centre is here to support them every step of the way to a healthy, loving relationship.

WHO IS THE SECOND STEP PROGRAMME FOR?

To be eligible for the programme, individuals should be:

• 18+ years old

• A resident of Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland

WE ARE UNABLE TO WORK WITH INDIVIDUALS IF:

• They are currently in criminal proceedings due to their use of violence against a current or former partner, or for an offence against a child. (Individuals in criminal proceedings for other types of offences could be eligible, please make us aware of these when making a referral or call us to discuss.)

• They are currently in private law proceedings related to child custody or child contact.

• Children’s Services are involved with a family and are the case is entering proceedings related to custody of a child (If the case is likely to enter proceedings or is in pre-proceedings, please contact us before making a referral).

• If they have previously disengaged from our service, or a similar service then we would ask for at least a 6-month break from when they disengaged. They will also need to demonstrate why they are now able to commit to the programme.

WHAT THE SECOND STEP PROGRAMME ISN’T

• These are some common misconceptions about The Second Step programme:

• Participants who complete the course are not automatically considered as non-abusive. The Second Step programme is designed to give individuals the ability to make choices about changing their behaviour.

• It is not a “quick-fix”. Changing behaviour doesn’t happen over night and requires going through a process of change. Participants will be expected to replace habits they may have learnt over a long period of time

• Whilst there are elements of anger management involved in The Second Step programme, this isn’t an anger management course.

• This isn’t a course for couples. It’s for individuals who want to address their abusive behaviour.
